2023 Impact Story - Building a Better Table
‘Building A Better Table’ Unites Community Partners to Boost Civic Engagement
The key to any thriving community is having residents that are engaged at all levels and work hard to make where they live the best it can be. But what if people don’t know where to even start doing that work? A local coalition is working to build that knowledge base and foster a new generation of resident leaders.
The idea for Building a Better Table stemmed from conversations between Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley senior director of community impact Sarah Lowry, Ohio Environmental Council regional director Christopher Colón and Thrive Mahoning Valley director of advancement Vicki Vicars. All three do work aimed at improving the Mahoning Valley and all three have seen the shortfalls of current systems – but also see what can be done well.
“We’ve seen time and time again that no matter how well thought out or supported community initiatives are, we run into the same leadership challenges,” Lowry says. “All of our organizations have a commitment to resident engagement and we all recognize that we continue to rely on the same people all the time. It’s not fair to keep going back to the same people when there are so many people out there doing good things.”

2023 Impact Story - Autism Society Fund
New Agency Fund Helps Autism Society Prepare for the Future
Even beyond her work as the director of the Autism Society of the Mahoning Valley, Robin Suzelis is familiar with the challenges of raising children with autism. That familiarity helps drive her work at the nonprofit to make sure it’s always doing everything it can to provide whatever support is needed.
“There are so many needs that parents of neurotypical children don’t think about. At the age my oldest is at, other parents are thinking about college, but we’re thinking about how he’s going to be cared for long-term between our spending and the little bit of government assistance that’s available,” she says. “It’s hard to think about, let alone plan for.”

2023 Impact Story - Paul Dutton and the Swanston Fund
Dutton’s Work with Swanston Fund Left a Brighter Future for Valley Kids
The Swanston Fund became a supporting organization of the Community Foundation in 2010. Since joining, the fund has awarded nearly $4.3 million in grants, supporting major projects at places like Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley and Potential Development and smaller community-focused organizations like Shepherds of All God’s Children Learning Center and Down Syndrome Association of the Valley.
“It took a lot of negotiation and a lot of meetings to hammer out what we’d do, what the fund would ultimately do and how everything worked with the trustees’ vision,” says Patty Brozik, founding president of the Community Foundation and its leader when the Swanston Fund moved here. “When it came to the foundation, I think part of it is because our focus was more on ‘What is the reason we do what we do?’”
The push to be more focused and strategic in its grantmaking, she adds, was largely driven by Dutton. For years, the process for grantmaking was taking in applications, deciding which ones were best aligned with the fund’s mission and sending money out. Dutton wanted to see something bigger, something aimed at creating real and lasting change for the Valley’s kids.

Martha Ellers Endowment Fund Helps Trumbull County Historical Society Create Paid Internship
Lifelong Warren resident Martha Ellers had an abiding interest in history. Preserving it, researching it, celebrating it, and understanding it. It is with this in mind that a new endowment fund has been created in her name to support the Trumbull County Historical Society.
“She helped bring it all to life. History to my mother was not something dead and on paper,” says Elizabeth Ellers.
Adds Andy Ellers, “I have fond memories of our family participating in the Walk on Millionaire’s Row event along Mahoning Avenue in Warren. She wanted people to remember the significance of Warren and Trumbull County.”

Agency Fund at CFMV Gives Goodwill Peace of Mind
With roots stretching back some 130 years, Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries has a long history of serving some of the most vulnerable people and getting them connected to the services they need to thrive.
Beyond the retail stores – now numbering 10 across Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties, as well as in Mercer and Lawrence Counties in Pennsylvania – that it’s probably best known for, the nonprofit offers vision services including children’s screenings and support groups; the Radio Reading Service where volunteers read newspapers, magazines and books for broadcast at WYSU; business services including laundry, lawn care and janitorial staff; and the Mission Services branch, which helps clients with workforce development services.
“We’re really fortunate that while we are a nonprofit, we can operate as a social enterprise. We’re able to run our stores to fund our programs and offer employment in the community,” says Annie Phillips, CEO of the local Goodwill.
